The Ink-smudged Architect of the Archive

I’m Dwight — a designer, storyteller, and puzzle-maker with ink on my hands and escape plans in my pocket. By day, I wrangle project teams in the world of enterprise tech consulting. But my real work happens after hours — crafting immersive, story-forward escape room experiences under the name The Mad Pen & Quill. The seed was planted when I picked up my first d20 and started poring over a paperback module in a red box back in the early ’80s. My nerdroots burrowed deep — and over time, they grew into puzzle adventures for my kids and classroom takeovers, which in turn have evolved into something much bigger: a commitment to world-building, mystery-weaving, and the art of making people say, “Wait… was that part of the game?”

I don’t run a storefront, and I don’t plan to. I’m here to build worlds — to design white-label escape room experiences, audio adventures, classroom games, and puzzle-laced stories that can be deployed anywhere. The Mad Pen & Quill is my creative HQ and portfolio-in-progress, but also a proving ground for what’s possible when puzzles meet narrative, and the ordinary cracks open into something unforgettable.

The minds behind — and well, let’s face it, sometimes right out on the front lines of — the madness. The Mad Pen and The Quill are the stewards of this scriptorium, and are often whispering inspiration to me in inky script.

And of course, there’s The Ma — er, The Pen. He prefers just, “The Pen.” He’s trying (not particularly successfully) to shake the “Mad” moniker. Hard to do when he’s on a non-stop, ink-drunk bender. But he means well!… I think. The Pen writes, rambles, and inspires creativity and mischief. He esnures the ideas make their way into the ether for The Quill to wrangle and catalogue. Believe it or not, there’s a blot of wisdom to be found between the splatters of his rants. Don’t — ahem — write him off too quickly.*

The Quill

First, let me just ask that you forgive The Quill’s grandiosity. He gets a bit pompous and pretentious when he soliloquizes. Keep an eye out for my footnotes on his verbose rhetoric — I’ll try to let the air out a bit. And know that he’s just taking his role as curator of the Archives seriously. So try not to take it personally when he looks down his nib at you.
